The former Italian Concession was established in 1902. It was the only Italian Concession in the world. Many of the old Italian style buildings still exist today. The planner of the old Italian concession was Lt. Fileti. He realized that the proximity to the train station as well as the HaiRiver dock made the Italian Concession a prime location for land speculation. He cleared the area, then sold the land to investors. In 1914, in cooperation with Mobil Petrol Company, the first asphalt road in Tianjin was paved here. The Italian Concession also had a hospital, a public park and various entertainment establishments. It was the cleanest and most elegant of all the Tianjin concessions.
