The former Austro-Hungarian Concession was established in 1902. This concession (1902 to 1917) was short-lived due to the First World War. It was the only Austro-Hungarian Concession in the world and was located in the current Hebei District on the eastern bank of Hai He River. During the battle of Tianjin 200 seamen were sent to Tianjin, although they did not take part in occupying the city along with the allied forces.
In 2003, as part of the Hai He River development plan, the Tianjin municipal government preserved the former Austro-Hungarian Consulate and the former Austro-Hungarian Club.

The famous Austrain architect Rolf Geyling came to Tianjin in 1929. Here he established, along with several partners, the architectural and construction firm Geyling & Skoff. They erected a showroom-office building for Siemens (the German electro-engineering company) in downtown Tianjin. In later years Geyling continued his work in private practice, concentrating on apartment buildings, individual residences and some industrial facilities. Most of his projects date from that period.
