The former American Concession was established in 1861. Many famous Americans lived in Tianjin:

The thirty-first American president Herbert Clark Hoover (1874-1964) and his wife; Charles Daniel Tenney, the first Dean of Studies of Peiyang University (the first western style university in China - currently Tianjin University).


George Catlett Marshall

Joseph Warren Stilwell

Several military officers, including George Catlett Marshall (1880-1959), David Barrett, Albert Coady Wedemeyer and Joseph Warren Stilwell (1883-1946) were stationed at the American barracks. The American Pulitzer Prize winning author John Hersey was born in Tianjin.

In the last years of Qing Dynasty, the governor of Zhili province, Li Hongzhang, became an advocate of Western medicine, after a female American doctor cured his wife.
