Abstract: The Shijitang Li was a relatively recent arrival to Tianjin, settling in the city around the turn of the 16th century. In time, however, it accumulated considerable wealth in the form of family corporate land estates located at Xiaoxinzhuang, a suburb of Tianjin, and an assortment of salt monopolies. Using the family’s surviving ledgers from 1904-1940, this paper is a preliminary analysis of how the household managed its portfolio of land and other investments, dealt with its tenants, and spent its money.
